The connection between transportation and our environment is clear.
The Northern Virginia Transportation Authority recently adopted a long-term wish list of road, transit, bicycle and pedestrian projects, totalling about $44 billion. With only around $1.5 billion in funding over the next six years, NVTA has to select and prioritize what can be funded under their Six Year Program, spanning from 2018 to 2023. The local and state elected officials on the NVT Authority board are holding a public hearing on May 10 ahead of their vote on the final plan in June.
Attend the hearing to urge your local representative to support funding clean and equitable transportation options to support walkable, bike-able transit-oriented communities.
More information: This June, a regional group of local representatives who form the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority will decide how to spend $1.5 billion in transportation funds. Funding decisions for local public transportation are critical to conserve land, reduce energy use, our impact on the environment, and provide mobility. The Sierra Club think these investments should provide more transportation choices, so we can walk, bicycle and use transit for more everyday trips; promote economic development that benefits all parts of the region; and preserve green space and rural areas. Advocate for Northern Virginia officials to put transit and smart growth first to benefit your community and the entire Northern Virginia region this Spring.

The most effective way to address traffic congestion is to build more walkable, mixed-use, transit-friendly communities connected by an expanded network of frequent, reliable, high-capacity transit on dedicated rights-of-way. Building better communities in this way provides benefits for economic development and job creation, health, and the environment.
