Tell Xcel Energy to Lead the Way to 100% Renewable Energy in Minnesota!

The Minneapolis City Council just unanimously passed a resolution committing the city to run on 100% clean and renewable electricity by 2030! This historic resolution means that Minneapolis is the largest city in Minnesota, and 65th city or town nationwide, to commit to 100% clean and renewable energy for all.

This incredible victory shows that people in Minnesota are committed to clean energy, and it’s time that our largest utility, Xcel Energy, respond in kind to the high demand for investments in renewables.

Right now, Xcel Energy is developing its long term energy plan for Minnesota. This provides a huge opportunity to get the rest of Minnesota on a path to 100% renewable energy.

As a part of this effort, we must hold Xcel accountable to a transition based in principles that advance equity and seeks input from diverse communities in order to make an energy system that supports all Minnesotans.

Over the next year, we'll be calling on Xcel Energy to stop investing in dirty energy and develop a strong plan that puts all of Minnesota on a path to 100% Renewable energy. We hope you'll join us.

Dear Xcel Energy CEO Ben Fowke (cc: Minnesota Public Utilities Commission), The Minneapolis City Council just passed a resolution commiting the city to run on 100% clean energy by 2030! Minneapolis is the largest city in Minnesota to make this commitment. This incredible victory shows that the people of Minnesota are committed to clean energy, and it’s time Xcel Energy, respond in kind to the high demand for investments in renewables. Thank you for already presenting a strong vision for Xcel Energy’s future of 85% carbon free electricity, including 60% renewables, by 2030. I believe that with Xcel Energy’s leadership, a path to to 100% renewable energy for all Minnesotans is possible. In transitioning to 100% renewable energy, we can protect our air, water, and climate while creating quality economic opportunities in our state. As you embark on your 2019 resource plan, I ask that you consider the following values: - Climate Protection - Protect our climate by exceeding Minnesota’s climate goals; replace retiring power plants with renewable energy like wind and solar and energy conservation instead of fracked gas plants. - Public Health - Protect Minnesotans air, water and health by moving towards 100% renewable energy. - Justice - Ensure that all Minnesotans see the benefits of a shift to renewable energy, including careers, wealth, access, and infrastructure, including communities of color and low-income communities that have been disproportionately impacted by pollution, as well as communities impacted by transition away from fossil fuels. - Quality Careers - Create fair and equitable economic opportunities for all people employed in clean energy. - Affordability - Maintain affordability and accessibility of electricity to all customers. - Energy Democracy - Give customers a voice in where their electricity comes from.
