As climate change increasingly influences our international relations, Mike Pompeo is the wrong choice for Secretary of State.
Pompeo referred to the landmark Paris Climate Agreement as part of President Obama’s “radical environmental agenda.” As a Congressman, he ignored the scientific consensus around climate change and he refused to answer questions relating to climate change in his CIA confirmation hearing despite its role in destabilizing the globe and sowing conflict.
But there’s one area where Pompeo excels -- collecting big money from the Koch Brothers and the dirty fuels industry. From 2010 through 2017, Pompeo was the top recipient of Koch money each election cycle and collected more than $1.2 million from the dirty fuels industry during his short career in Congress.
As Secretary of State, Pompeo would play a critical role in evaluating dirty fuel projects proposed by the oil and gas industry to which he owes his success. His support for Keystone XL and opposition to the Clean Power Plan indicate that Pompeo is more interested in enriching corporate polluters than protecting people or the planet.
