Tell Congress to protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge

How do you get away with drilling in America's last unspoiled wilderness? Bury your scheme in the fine print of your budget plan. That's what Trump is trying to do with his 2018 budget -- the plan currently before Congress includes a provision to open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil and gas drilling.

And Trump isn't just stopping at the budget -- just this week, we learned that he and Interior Secretary Zinke are secretly working to bypass 40-year-old regulations that forbid seismic tests in the Refuge.

For decades, the threat of drilling in the Arctic Refuge has been very real. And for decades, people have spoken up to keep the oil and gas industry at bay. Now that the balance of power has shifted in an extraordinary way, we must work even harder to keep Big Oil and their drilling rigs out of the Refuge.

Tell Congress to reject this destructive budget proposal and protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge once and for all.

The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is one of the world’s most beautiful and unspoiled landscapes. However, Big Oil is eager to drill in the coastal plain of the Arctic Refuge -- and Trump's current 2018 budget plan includes provisions that would open the area for oil and gas drilling. A plan this dangerous and destructive has no place in the budget, and I urge you to reject any proposal that includes oil revenue from the Arctic Refuge. The Refuge is one of our nation's most important spiritual and majestic places, with caribou, muskoxen, wolves, 200 species of migratory birds, and polar bears calling it home. The Gwich'in Nation, whose home has been the Arctic since time immemorial, have called for permanent protection of the birthing grounds of the Porcupine Caribou herd for over 30 years. Despite the Refuge’s importance to wildlife and people alike, oil companies have set their sights on drilling in this sensitive area for decades -- a threat that has intensified as they go to greater lengths to find oil. The Refuge is ground zero for climate change impacts -- over the past 40 years, Alaska has warmed twice as fast as the rest of the country. We can't risk compounding this problem by adding drilling to the equation. Because of these immense threats, now is the time to protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge once and for all. Please take action to protect the Arctic Refuge and reject this disastrous budget plan.
