Don't cut California's national monuments

Giant Sequoia and six of California's national monuments face an uncertain future.

Over 20 years of national monument designations are now under review by the Department of the Interior, and you only have until July 7 to make sure your lands remain protected. These imperiled monuments include Berryessa Snow Mountain, Carrizo Plain, Cascade Siskiyou, Giant Sequoia, Mojave Trails, San Gabriel Mountains and Sand to Snow National Monuments.

Make no mistake about it -- this comment period is a slow-motion threat to America's national parks, public lands, and oceans. As we work together to resist the Trump administration's assault on our environment, we cannot allow this review to undermine our nation's long history of protecting the places that celebrate our historical, cultural, and natural heritage.

Tell Interior Secretary Zinke the public has already spoken and we want California's public lands protected for generations to come.

I am shocked and disappointed that you are moving forward with a review of 27 of our national monuments. These magnificent lands celebrate our mountains, deserts, forests, canyons, and oceans. These places are living museums that tell the stories of cultures dating back millennia as well as the stories of people today. They also provide thousands of jobs and millions of dollars in economic benefit to surrounding communities that have been revitalized by and depend on recreation and tourism. Any effort to alter or eliminate our national monuments is an attack on our natural resources, history and economy. In California, seven of our most special places are included in the review. Berryessa Snow Mountain, Carrizo Plain, Cascade Siskiyou, Giant Sequoia, Mojave Trails, San Gabriel Mountains and Sand to Snow National Monuments are irreplaceable and must remain protected. Our public lands help define who we are as a nation. Instead of asking which parts of our history and heritage we could roll back or even eliminate, please ask how we can make our outdoors reflect the full story of our country. The only logical conclusion for this review is the same one people came to when each monument was originally designated with public review and engagement -- these 27 national monuments deserve to be protected for generations to come.
