Stop Puente Power Plant

The California Energy Commission (CEC) is considering approving the Puente Power Plant and we need your help to stop it!

We're asking folks to write their own short, personalized letter today. We put together the talking points and a short sample letter below to help you get started. Feel free to integrate those talking points into your letter, but make sure to personalize yours. Once you hit send, we'll deliver the letter for you.

The most powerful and influential messages are those written in your own words. In the past, this has been a highly impactful tactic. It'll take you five minutes, but it's worth your time. Go ahead, don't be shy -- tell the CEC why you want them to reject the proposal to build the Puente Power Plant.

Here's a sample letter:

Dear Commissioners,

I'm writing to urge you to reject the Puente Power Plant. I'm really concerned about the impact of climate change on my kid's future and can't understand why the Energy Commission would permit another power plant when we have other solutions available. This is a really simple matter of what's right and what's wrong. Building this power plant is wrong. It's wrong for communities like those in Oxnard that clearly want clean energy, and it is wrong for future generations and kids today like mine, who deserve a fair shot at a livable climate. We need to turn the page and make a break from polluting power plants and support clean alternatives. I urge you to reject this dangerous power plant.

Tips:
Keep it personal -- the more personal and informed by your own experience, the better. The Commission has extensive data at their hands from both sides of this fight. They need to hear from you, the public. Why does this issue matter to you? Why do you want to see the Energy Commission reject this proposal? How does pollution or climate change impact you?

Talking Points:
  • NRG's proposal exacerbates decades of environmental racism in the Oxnard community.
  • The proposed power plant would add more pollution in a low-income community of color, already fighting back against pollution from three other power plants in Oxnard.
  • There are alternatives to building this power plant. Southern California Edison and NRG are both building energy storage and clean energy solutions in other parts of the region. It's past time that low-income communities get clean energy instead of another polluting power plant.
  • California is leading the way to a clean energy future. This power plant doesn't fit with our climate and clean energy goals.
  • The Commission should listen to local community members and elected officials who strongly oppose this project.

Help stop the Puente Power Plant from polluting Oxnard communities and contributing to climate change! We can win this fight, and resist new dirty power plants, but only if you help. Take action today!
