Pledge to get kids outdoors

Today’s kids are spending less time in nature than any generation in history.

Nearly two-thirds of the U.S. population does not have close-to-home access to nature, with the greatest disparities found in low-income communities. Community gardens can bring nature into small spaces and are a great introduction to the outdoors for many kids. Time in nature makes us whole, healthy, and happy. It also improves learning and strengthens our communities. Adding more green space can even help mitigate some of the impacts of climate change. Yet far too few people have safe access to nearby nature.

No matter where you live, everyone deserves to breathe fresh air, drink clean water, and benefit from a connection to nature. Pledge to help kids in your life and community get outdoors and enjoy all that nature has to offer. There are many ways to get involved:
  • Take advantage of beautiful days to get outside and play
  • Go on a hike and bring someone new with you
  • Volunteer at a school or community garden
  • Talk to your child’s school principal about the importance of recess and outdoor learning during the school day
  • Get involved or start local community discussions about parks, gardens, and open spaces
  • Talk to local leaders about how important it is that the outdoors be safe and available for all communities
  • Look for other ways to get involved and find opportunities for kids in your life
