The movement for 100% clean energy is unstoppable.

On March 21,  2017, Madison, Wisconsin's Common Council unanimously approved a resolution committing to 100% clean and renewable energy.

Minutes later, a thousand miles away, the Republican-led, rural town of Abita Springs also unanimously approved a resolution establishing a community-wide goal of transitioning to 100% clean and renewable energy by 2030.

Making Abita Springs, the 1st town or city in Louisiana, and the 25th city in the United States to formally commit to 100% clean, renewable energy -- joining major metropolises like San Diego and Salt Lake City and smaller, rural cities in places like Georgetown, Texas and Greensburg, Kansas.

In January, 2017, Mayor Greg Lemons led the way for this commitment by signing a mayoral proclamation endorsing a goal of 100% clean, renewable energy in Abita Springs. In his own words, “transitioning to 100 percent renewable energy is a practical decision we’re making for our environment, our economy, and for what our constituents want in Abita Springs. As a republican, politics has nothing to do with it for me. Clean energy just makes good economic sense.”

Here in Louisiana, we've seen firsthand how dirty fuels like oil, gas, and coal, can endanger our bayous and waters, our communities and families, and our local economies.

By committing to 100% clean and renewable energy like wind and solar, we are charting a course away from dirty fossil fuels to one where there are more jobs in clean energy, more energy security for families and our most vulnerable residents, and more opportunity for people across the country.

Wind power generation has more than doubled in the past four years, and over the past six years has plummeted in price. Solar power generation has increased by a factor of five, making solar one of the fastest-growing industries in America, and the fastest-growing industry in the world! Which means that supporting clean energy is not just about leadership, it’s also about supporting our local economies, jobs, and the health of our communities.
