Tell Volkswagen to Stop Fighting For Dirtier Air!

Auto manufacturers are already lining up to ask the Trump administration to roll back emissions regulations. It's more important than ever to fight for cleaner vehicles since transportation now accounts for more carbon pollution than any other U.S. source. These vehicle rules are already reducing dangerous air pollution and save consumers in fueling costs and shouldn’t be weakened.

Luckily, we have a chance to fight back. By convincing one or more of the automakers to oppose this move, we can work to keep pollution and efficiency standards right where they are. And the best first target? Volkswagen.

After duping millions of customers by inserting cheating devices on its “clean diesel” vehicles, Volkswagen started to move in the right direction by agreeing to compensate its U.S.-based customers, fund clean transportation programs, and invest in new electric vehicle model development. But now Volkswagen is moving in the wrong direction by supporting the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers in its recent letter to President-elect Trump urging the weakening of passenger vehicle fuel efficiency regulations.

It is very disturbing to learn that Volkswagen supported the recent Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers’ letter to president-elect Trump urging his new administration to find ways to weaken vehicle efficiency regulations. The federal light duty vehicle efficiency and 10-state Zero Emission Vehicle regulations are essential to ensure that we slash air pollution that threatens our health and our climate. Originally agreed to previously by a bi-partisan majority of policy-makers, labor groups, environmental and health groups, and all major automakers, these regulations give consumers the more efficient vehicles they want, saving our fueling costs and increasing our new car options. Since the standards were put in place, new car sales have increased dramatically in the U.S. After Volkswagen duped consumers by installing cheat devices in its cars, the company has slowly started to regain public trust and credibility by agreeing to compensate consumers, invest in future clean electric vehicle models, and fund clean transportation programs. Supporting the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers in urging the Trump administration to weaken vehicle efficiency laws is a big step backward. Dirty transportation hasn’t worked for Volkswagen in the past, and it won’t work in the future. We urge Volkswagen to work with other automakers to ensure that moving forward, the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers will support clean transportation by retracting its previous requests to the new administration to weaken vehicle efficiency rules and fully supporting strong light-duty and zero-emission vehicle regulations that protect public health, American auto manufacturing jobs, a safer climate, and lower fueling costs for Americans.
