Support a Just Transition for Communities with the RECLAIM Act

Across much of the Midwest and Appalachia, communities have mined, transported, and processed coal for more than 100 years, performing some of the toughest jobs anyone can do. But the world’s energy economy is changing. Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell has agreed on this point, by stating that even under a Trump presidency coal mining jobs may not return to Kentucky and other coal states.

America needs laws that reflect the realities and challenges of the modern world. We need laws that guarantee clean air and clean water for all Americans, while also providing economic opportunities that keep pace with new technologies and the changing global marketplace. The RECLAIM Act, by speeding the release of $1 billion already collected from coal companies, would help provide opportunities for rural Americans in growing industries, while cleaning pollution from our land.

90% of Americans in affected states support the RECLAIM Act, according to a poll conducted by the West Virginia Center on Budget and Policy in cooperation with the Sierra Club. But Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell has not yet pledged his support - and without support from him and other congressional members, rural America can’t benefit from the opportunities the RECLAIM Act would bring.
