Cities across the country are ready for 100% clean energy.
People in both red states and blue states are realizing that modernizing our cities and towns with 100% clean and renewable energy will help create jobs and boost local economies. From large cities like Boise and San Diego to smaller towns like Aspen and Burlington VT, they’re going all-in on clean energy. We’re ready to take this step in Hanover and throughout the Upper Valley and become leaders in the nationwide transition to a clean energy economy.

Researchers at Stanford University, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and others have outlined a feasible path to a 100% renewable energy future, and we’re ready to build from this research in the Upper Valley. The renewable energy sector is booming. Wind and solar prices have rapidly declined in the past five years, and the solar industry is one of the fastest growing sectors of the US economy. Poll after poll shows that a majority of Americans support renewable energy. In a recent national survey of U.S. adults paid for by the Sierra Club, a whopping 83 percent of respondents said they support a goal of 100% clean energy.  A recent economic study estimated that a transition to clean energy will add 1 million jobs in the U.S. by 2030 and increase household disposable income by $350-$400 in 2030 and by as much as $650 in 2050 (source: http://nextgenamerica.org/blog/our-clean-energy-economy/).

There are other benefits as well:
  • Stabilizing energy costs for citizens and businesses: Most of the Upper Valley’s large energy users are actively examining ways of moving towards renewables. Transitioning to clean energy means stable and affordable energy costs and is a hedge against an uncertain and increasingly expensive fossil fuel future.
  • Encouraging new jobs: Renewable energy is creating good-paying jobs at a faster pace than traditional energy.
  • Preserving our way of life: The Upper Valley communities enjoy clean air and water, but climate change threatens our delicate ecosystem and continued warming will severely affect many of the things we have come to cherish—from maple sugaring to skiing.
  • Slowing the rise of global temperatures: A transition to 100% renewable energy will help us keep global temperatures from rising above the internationally agreed upon limit of  2 °C and avoid the worst case scenario of climate change.
As the home of Dartmouth College, our community is very influential – regionally, nationally and internationally. This means we are well positioned to be a leading example in the transition to 100% renewable energy. We are asking residents of Hanover, Dartmouth College, and the Upper Valley to commit to a transition to 100% clean and renewable energy by 2050. To achieve this we are also calling for a 100% renewable electric grid by 2030 and all renewable heat and transportation as well by 2050.

Please sign our petition to support a just transition to a 100% renewable Upper Valley.
