100% St. Pete aims to power the city of St. Petersburg, Florida with 100% renewable energy.

Climate change impacts St. Petersburg with sea level rise and more frequent, intense rain events already resulting in an increase in flood issues, sewer overflows and higher insurance rates plus more potential for dramatic storm damage and impacts. Florida is especially vulnerable to climate change, it has a striking gap between potential and actual renewable energy production, and it faces strong state-level headwinds that exemplify the need for local innovation and leadership. Meanwhile Florida’s vast clean energy sources, like solar, are more reliable and cheaper than ever before. To protect our quality of life we must commit to clean, affordable energy by transitioning from fossil fuels to clean, renewable energy sources. The Sun Shines Here, let’s use it!

Cities across the United States and around the world are leading this transition by committing to work towards 100% clean electricity. Seventeen U.S. cities, including San Diego, Minneapolis, Grand Rapids, Georgetown, TX, Burlington, VT and Aspen, CO, have made similar 100% clean energy commitments, as have Vancouver, Paris, and Sydney. 100% clean, renewable power is the new standard for a livable future.

There are many benefits St Petersburg will realize by setting an ambitious goal for 100% renewable electricity by 2035. This goal will contribute to the city’s prosperity and quality of life by:

Growing our economy. A 100% renewable energy goal would further St. Petersburg leadership in clean technology industries and attract new high tech businesses, creating good local jobs. Major corporations including Google, Apple, and Facebook are striving for 100% clean energy. Increasingly, high tech industries want to locate in areas where they can get clean energy.
Stabilizing energy costs for citizens and businesses. The cost of natural gas is highly volatile. Meanwhile clean energy is getting cheaper and better every day. Transitioning to clean energy means stable and affordable energy costs and insulation against an uncertain and increasingly expensive fossil fuel future.
Protecting our quality of life. St. Petersburg worked hard to become Florida’s first Green City and a STAR community. Why? To enhance our community, support our residents and protect our tourist based economy by protecting our environment. St. Petersburg is and strives to be one of the most livable and vibrant cities in the nation. Replacing fossil fuels with clean energy will protect the foundation of St. Petersburg’s quality of life.
Improving public health. Climate change is causing more frequent and intense storms. Extreme heat and fossil fuel pollution threaten the health of St. Petersburg’s citizens, particularly children and the elderly. Dear Mayor Rick Kriseman and city leaders, We appreciate your leadership in making the City of St Petersburg a sustainable, livable, vibrant economy and community. We applaud the steps towards 100% Clean Energy already exemplified with the Mayor’s Executive Order on Sustainability and his signing of the Declaration on Local Leadership.
